Cashmere Shawls and Wraps: A Selection Checklist for Buyers

Shawls and wraps share buyer searches but not inquiry lists. This checklist sets out the grouping, the sorting questions, and the inquiry shape for cashmere shawl and wrap lists.

The checklist in one view

A cashmere shawl and wrap list is settled in five passes: group the list, name the setting and occasion for each group, name the colour, shape and size requirements, put quantities beside each item, and add anything to settle in writing. The passes run in that order, and each pass writes into the inquiry directly, so the finished message carries the list and the questions together.

The checklist below walks each pass in turn. Buyers with a settled list can use it as a final read-through before sending. Buyers with an open choice can use it as the sorting method itself, working the passes until the grouping settles.

Pass one: group the list

Split the list into shawls, wraps, and wrap shawls, with each name in its own group. Cashmere shawls sit in the shawl group, cashmere wraps sit in the wrap group, and cashmere wrap shawls sit in their own group between the two. A list with no grouping makes the questions harder to place, because a question that belongs to a wrap can sit beside a shawl item by mistake.

Inside each group, split again by family where the list spans families: cashmere items in their own sub-groups, silk and wool items in theirs. The sub-group split matters when the list spans the shawl and wrap lines beyond cashmere, because a requirement for one family can sit beside an item from another family by mistake.

Pass two: setting and occasion for each group

Name the setting and the occasion for each group, in the buyer's own words, beside the group they belong to. Evening occasions and travel days lead the cashmere shawl and wrap lists buyers write most often, with daytime occasions behind those. Name the setting first, then the occasion inside it, so the list reads as setting, then occasion, then items.

When two groups share a setting but not an occasion, keep the groups separate and name the occasion for each. A shared setting does not make two groups one group, and the questions beside each group follow the occasion, not the setting alone.

Pass three: colour, shape and size requirements

Name the colour, shape and size requirements for each group, beside the items they belong to, and ask what applies to each item. This site publishes no colour, shape or size claim for any item, so the requirements belong in the inquiry, named in full. Requirements named once for the whole list leave the question open for groups the requirements do not cover.

Shape questions deserve care in shawl and wrap lists, because the names themselves describe shapes as buyers picture them. Name the shape as the buyer pictures it, in the buyer's own words, beside the items it belongs to, and ask what applies to each item. The shape name in a search term does not settle the shape question on its own.

Pass four: quantities and the destination market

Put the quantity beside each item, in the buyer's own terms, and name the destination market for the list as a whole. No page on this site states a minimum order figure, and no page states a lead-time figure. Put quantity and timing questions in the inquiry, beside the items they belong to, and keep them with the list.

When a list spans several destination markets, split the list by market before sending, with the quantities beside each item in each split list. A single list spanning markets with no split leaves the market question open for every item on it.

Pass five: anything to settle in writing

Add anything to settle in writing beside the items it belongs to, in the same message as the list. Certificate questions belong here, beside the items they belong to: certificates are available upon request. Anything that belongs to one group and is written beside another group will be read as belonging to the wrong items, so place each question with care.

The record to keep

Keep the item list as sent beside the record for the inquiry, with the checklist notes attached to the items they belong to. If you receive a confirmation, keep it with the quote, beside the list it belongs to. When the list changes after the inquiry, send the changed list as a whole, with the checklist notes carried beside the items they belong to, so the record stays in one place.

The shawl guide page sets out the same sorting questions in guide form for buyers whose choice between shawls and wraps is still open. The wholesale shawls page gives the same inquiry shape for larger shawl and wrap lists.

Reading the checklist back

Read the finished inquiry back against the five passes, one pass at a time. First, the grouping: does every item sit in a shawl, wrap or wrap shawl group, split by family inside each group. Second, the settings and occasions: does every group carry its setting and its occasion, named in the buyer's own words. Third, the requirements: does every item carry its colour, shape and size requirements beside it, with nothing named once for the whole list that belongs to one group only. Fourth, the quantities and the market: does every item carry its quantity, and does the destination market sit with the list as a whole. Fifth, the open questions: does anything to settle in writing sit beside the items it belongs to, with questions about certificates, which are available upon request, beside the items they belong to.

A message that passes all five readings is ready to send. A message that fails one reading needs that pass reworked, not the whole message rewritten: fix the grouping, or the settings, or the requirements, or the quantities, or the open questions, and read that pass again. The checklist is a tool for repair as much as for drafting, and the repair pass costs far less than a second message correcting the first.
